Today's collection is architectural. I love water towers on top our city buildings. I love the details of old buildings. You have to check out this building in terra cotta color. I never noticed the gargoyle details on it! It's not that tall of a building so the gargoyles are visible from street level - you just gotta look up. I love seeing green spaces on rooftops of these urban buildings especially when they're peeping over the parapet or you see the tree tops. Check them out below, and don't forget that there is the photo album if you want to see some of these details up close.

Sorry for the delay of uploading the photos for January 30, 2008. I forgot the camera so I ended up taking pictures around the home. I think I might do that for the future when nothing catches my eye in the city. This collection is only of these little flowers. One fell on the carpet. Unfortunately, these were not taken in the best of lighting conditions. The flash didn't help. It washed out the flower. Either way, I hope you enjoy these brief shots.

And if you're interested in getting a closer look, check out the photo album.

Today was a gray day; overcast. Not a great day for picture taking but I did see two guys on scaffolding painting on a Sunsilk advertisement; take a look.

This week is Restaurant Week in NYC. Participating restaurants are offering pre fixe menus at lunch and at dinner. Lunch cost $24.07 and I think dinner is $35. My colleagues and I went to lunch at Morimoto over in the Meatpacking District. Chef Morimoto is the fames Iron Chef for both Iron Chef (Japan) and Iron Chef America. These shows are shown on the Food Network and you can find out more information about these shows on their website. The interior of the restaurant is designed by world renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando. The restaurant offers Japanese food with a non-Japanese twist. We each ordered the sushi entree. It was a very good portion. I was filled. The fish were not slimy or wet looking as is offered in other sushi restaurants. I had my camera for the lunch and took these photos.

For a closer look at the restaurant, take a look at the photo album.

Nothing much going on today. Went to the movies and saw "Atonement". A wonderful movie and I highly recommend it. I only had time to take pictures on my way home on the bus. I tried to take pictures of people but it didn't turn out too well. You'll see...

If any of the pictures interest you, you can see them up close in the photo album.

I was in Soho today, running some errands. Today was a good day to take pictures especially being in Soho. Soho is always bustling with tourists and shoppers. The sidewalks are always crowded with street vendors selling their hand made items or souvenirs. One guy, a street vendor, said "No pictures." I wasn't even aiming my camera at his table. I wasn't going to argue with him so I obliged. And as I walked off, he said, "$20 a picture." What a dumbass, I thought to myself. I also took some pictures of graffiti that I've not noticed before.
Take a look at the pictures and don't forget about the photo album if you want a closer look at today's collection.

Today was an exciting day for photo documentation. I was in the Upper East Side this morning for a meeting. I got there about 30 minutes earlier. Across the street, they were erecting a new high end luxury residential building. They were lifting this giant pale filled with concrete to the top of the building to add more floors. I was just amazed at the coordination, moves, and work that it took to erect this building. Check out the pictures below or in the photo album.

Today when I stepped out for lunch the sun caught my eye. It was bright and sunny. The last couple of days have been overcast so when the sun was out today it was warmer than usual especially when walking on the side with the sun. And while I was walking downtown, I couldn't help but notice the shadows that were casted especially those casted by trees.

Check out the photo album for a closer look of the shadows.

Yesterday was Martin Luther King Day and in observance of an important man in our American history, our office closed for the day. I was home, which meant I did not take any pictures. The day after MLK day is apparently garbage day as you can see from the photos I had taken today.

I was walking down to Sunrise Market and along the way down Broadway and then along Houston and then down West Broadway, the sidewalks were strewn with black garbage bags stuffed with people's trash. People were also still throwing out Christmas trees. It was just amazing to see the amount of garbage people can generate.
If you want to take a closer gander of the trash that was thrown out, check out the photo album.

It was a very cold day in the city today; in the mid 20's. The city was relatively quiet due to the cold weather and the big football game. Despite the cold weather, I was able to take some pictures of some interesting elements of NYC. Take a look, and feel free to visit the photo album for a closer view of today's collection.

Never a dull moment at Union Square. There was a rally/protest for a Turkish man named Hrant Dink. He was assassinated in January 2007. I guess they were marking the anniversary of the tragedy.
There were also some skateboarders doing their tricks. And then I went over to Jersey City and took some pictures of the financial district of lower Manhattan.

Went up to Union Square for lunch and took a picture of one of my favorite buildings along Broadway. It reminds me of Venice every time I walk pass. The building next to it has an interesting penthouse; I'd like to know what it's like to live up there. And when walking towards 5th Avenue, I noticed another interesting buiding, so much ornate detailing. I am always amazed to see the amount of building with beautiful stone detailing. You just have to look up every once and a while.

I went to the Whole Foods on Houston and Bowery for lunch. I needed to pick up some yogarts for snacking/breakfast at the office. Along the way, I saw some interesting graffiti and some other miscellaneous things. Lafayette is a nice street to walk down on. The streets are wide, quiet, and hardly any people; not as popular as Broadway.

"Nightlights" was tonight's theme. I just like how the lights just twinkle, glow, and illuminate the night. There is a curiosity, a draw towards the flame like a moth but unlike the moth, you don't get burned. Well, maybe you don't get burned.
Feel free to visit the photo album for larger views of the this evening's collection.

Again, sorry about yesterday's lack of pictures. Today was an interesting one. I was walking to my meeting along 28th Street, aka "the flower district". It was a great opportunity to take pictures of today's fresh cuts. There were fresh flowers like daffodils, willows with their fuzzy buds, baby pines to name a few. Unfortunately, the weather was a bit overcast. Not to fret, I plan to be back and take more pictures when it is more sunny and warm.

Don't forget to visit the photo album if you want to see larger views of the images.

Sorry folks, no photos to share today. I was uninspired. Nothing caught my eye. i thought it was going to snow this evening. Instead, it rained! It is supposed to snow tomorrow morning so maybe I'll share some snowy New York scenes.

January 12, 2008

I am slowly working my way to taking candid pictures of people. I think there is always something interesting in the faces and actions of people. There's a lot of expression and thoughts, even a story behind it.

Today was a nice day; cool but sunny and warm in the sun. I had a little sweet snack at Once Upon A Tart, a great little cafe that specializes in sweet and savory tarts. They also serve sandwiches and salads. I was sitting outside and placed my cammy on the table and took pictures of people as they walked by.

Later on the day/evening, I took pictures of the trash and graffiti on the trains. There are stories behind those artifacts left behind by people. Who was on the train, what they were reading, eating, doing, etc.

I also thought it would be interesting to document my bus ride home as people got off at their stops. Weekends aren't usually full with passengers. Sometimes there are tons of students that get on the bus; the bus passes by a popular university in Queens. Tonight was kind of quiet. Next time, I will try to document a crowded bus during rush hour. Rush hour can get really packed.

Today was a really gray day. In fact, I was able to get a few pictures before the down-pour. And I was able to get some shot of what rush hour is like at WTC. I plan to take better pictures of this in the future. But in the meantime, enjoy these pictures.

Don't forget to flip through the photo album for larger views of the pictures.

Today when I stepped out to lunch I was inspired by the incredible details of our New York City architecture. I work in the Soho Greenwich East Village area. I'm not to far from Union Square either. Not only did I capture some interesting details, I also captured some nice shots of doves sunbathing on some rocks in the private neighborhood garden along LaGuardia Place.

Feel free to flip through the photo album for larger views of today's collection and past collections.

January 9, 2008

I didn't forget my camera today; a relatively nice day albeit gusty. I also didn't take as many photos on my way out to lunch; not much caught my eye but I hope you enjoy the today's collection. Again, don't forget to check out the photo album to view them larger.

January 8, 2008

Well, I knew this day would happen. I forgot to bring my camera today and so, no pictures to share with you. It didn't really matter as it was a busy work day. I didn't take a lunch break. I grabbed a quick lunch after a meeting and returned to the office.

I'll remember the camera tomorrow.

January 7, 2008

Today was a very warm day! I think the high was 58 degrees! Pretty nice for winter in January. I went to lunch and decided to walk down LaGuardia Place because of the neighborhood garden; a very nice garden at that. Even though it is winter and most likely, nothing is in bloom, I was sure that I would find something interesting to capture on digital film. Check out the fruits of my labor of love.

Later that evening, I went to take care of some creative business. On the way, I saw an interesting Nativity scene from across the street. The Nativity scene was in front of the Saint Anthony of Padua Church on Sullivan and Houston.

Again, feel free to visit the
photo album for a closer look.

Today was another day around Union Square. This time, my picture taking were focused on the wildlife - squirrels and pigeons.

I also saw the electronics recycling truck. I didn't know they were here today. Had I known, I would have brought down some of my old electronics. I think this a great service and a way for everyone to contribute the conservation of our environment.

For more information about this service, check out their website and when they will be at USP for their next pick up.

Well, today was a better day for picture taking. I was at the Union Square Green Market; always a great place for picture taking. Lots of apples and pumpkins and succulents, oh my! They were mainly snap shots. Take a look. I also took some pictures of sparrows frolicking at a nearby willow tree.

Again, for a closer view of the pictures, visit the photo album.

Today was a terrible day for collecting pictures. Though it wasn't as cold as yesterday, it was still cold. I did take a neat shot of two squirrels in a dead tree in Washington Square Park. It could have been a better shot. But considering I could have passed up this opportunity, this was as good as it gets. Feel free to check out the photo album to view all the photos taken so far.

Luckily, tomorrow promises to be warmer, mid 40's. So better pictures tomorrow.

Accuweather said today's high was 22 F degrees, which meant that I didn't wander too far from the office during lunch, and as a result my picture gathering was not as satisfactory as I would have hoped. Luckily, I have the rest of the year to make up for it. In any case, I hope you enjoy today's collection.

January 2, 2008

Well, it's the second day of 2008. It was nice to roll out of bed at around 10am or even later never pass noon. I returned to work today from a long winter break. I went to lunch at around noon and headed down to the Sunrise Mart in Soho. They have great lunch options! I used to get their grilled chicken salads. So good, well priced, and most importantly, I finish the whole thing! I usually find in these take away salads that the ration between greens and meaty substance to be inadequate. It's always a pile of greens and a small portion of substance. The grilled chicken salad is perfect. It is one chicken breast, or rather half of breast on top of bed of greens. That's what I ate during the summer. In the winter, I like their miso soup, chock full of tofu and seaweed, and scallions if you choose! I also get the edamme beans and/or spicy salmon onigiri. I am digressing.

I took some better and more interesting (than yesterday's) shots. Hopefully you'll agree too. If not, I certainly welcome your comments.

If you want to get a closer look at the pictures, please go to A Day in 2008. photo album.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! All the best for 2008!
It is the first day of two thousand eight and the official start of 'A Day in 2008.' photo-blog. I have to admit that I didn't get to a good start of documenting my day especially the first day of 2008. I hope to do better as the days pass. In any case, here is a sample of the photos I have taken thus far.
